16MPG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The numbers are in, I'm getting 16mpg with my Trans Am! That was with me totally flogging the car. The previous engine/carb/trans combo (350/edelbrock 1606/th350) got 9mpg. The struggles with the quadrajet and 700r4 trans swap were totally worth it. I got a larger engine with a more aggressive cam with other performance bits and still got a 7mpg increase. Look out Prius! That's what a 77% increase? I am so happy, I was hoping for around 13mpg. Now I want to hook up my torque converter lockout switch to lower cruise rpm some more and follow that with swapping my 3.08 rear gears for 3.73s.

I know they're kind of pricey, but have you thought about a TBI kit? Should get you a few more empeguhs.

http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/uncle-steve-it… sorry I doubted the capabilities of the TA, I guessed 11 mpg

Because they are pricey, I built this car on my minimum wage budget. I can't even afford a proper exhaust (mine is held in by wires). Also, I'm not sure if the system would fit under my shaker scoop.

I would ask if that was down hill, but you don't have up hill and down hill in Indiana.

This was with idling around in a parade for half an hour though.

That is amazing for a big block. I think that lowish rear gear ratio and .7 overdrive are helping.

The 400 is a small block, pontiac never made a big block. Even the 455 is a small block. But yeah, the over drive is being my savior.

Most of them aren't any bigger than the carbs they replace, but I can totally sympathize with the cost issue.

o_o

?!?!!?!?

O_O

What are your cylinder walls like?!? A half of an inch or something?

I guess I'm used to calling 390 engines big blocks, so that's the source of my assumptions.

Good way to catch Ford guys trying act like they know GM things though XD

Pretty much. The 350 through 455 used the same block only bored different sizes. Here's a shot of my 400 during the rebuild.

Iiiiinteresting...

The bore is only an 1/8 inch difference, but your stroke is a full 3/4 inch more.

Yet, it seems that the cylinders on the 302 are closer together with more metal towards to the front (especially) and the back. I wonder how the water jacket volume differences influences cooling.

Stroke is up and down movement right? No clue but I do know there is a problem with boring a 455 over too much. There starts to be a danger of not enough metal between the cylinders and maybe something with cooling gets messed up.

Kinja'd!!! StoneCold > Bandit
07/25/2014 at 00:02

Kinja'd!!!0

Yup, that's stroke.

But wait, there's a 455 version of this? Man, I imagine the max RPM can't be too crazy high; and if it is regular (5k-6k), must take a bit of time (relatively) to get there.

Oh yeah! The Pontiac 350 through 455 used the same block. Redline on my 400 is 6500 or so and will climb revs quite well. I would assume the 455 to be close as the motors can all share parts. I have a distributor and exhaust off a 350, heads and intake off a 400, and my cam is quite popular for 455 upgrades.
